Should I use the IRS tax filing assistance program (VITA) to help me file my taxes?Q.Should I use the IRS tax filing assistance program (VITA) to help me file my taxes? Will they make every effort to save me money? A.Actually, for the simple types of returns that VITA usually helps with, there are few opportunities to "save money" by creative tax preparation. By the time you go to get your taxes prepared, your tax is fairly well set. VITA will help determine your correct filing status, number of dependents, calculate the earned income credit, child credit, child care credit, etc. You might have to go somewhere else to get help with your state tax. Remember that it is the VOLUNTEERS Income Tax Assistance program. Many of the people working in this program can from retired accountants to college accounting students to just interested people with some knowledge. (I was VITA trained as my units Tax Officer and probably knew more from my own taxes than I was taught). I am not saying there is anything bad about the program, but it is designed to assist with mostly simple basic returns. If you have anything complex, they may or may not have someone there who can figure out what to do.
