Why doesn't the IRS publish free tax software?Q.Why doesn't the IRS publish free downloadable software for people to do their own taxes? Hey, they give out free tax forms (paper ones, that is), so why withhold software that would have many positive effects? A.That is an excellent question. The very bland answer is that Congress has not authorized it. A lot of the software out there is practically free when you consider all the rebates. There is nothing wrong with TurboTax or Tax Cut for a great many people. All freely provided tax opinions and financial advice guaranteed accurate or your money back. The lack of the free irs software is not caused by the CPA lobby, more likely the Block lobby. I think the IRS has enough problems designing forms. If they did provide free software, I doubt it would fulfill my firm's needs. I am happy to provide this free answer to you despite the tone of your question. Most probably because it would be very expensive to write and keep the software up to date, especially if they did it for multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, and Macs). Also, the IRS would be reluctant to take responsibility for the inevitable sofware errors. Other Questions : Irs Tax Form_InformationsI've been in the US since August, 1995 as a graduate student.
