Program about Irs Free Tax FilingQ.From the Taxes home page, I clicked the link called "Do your taxes online" under the "Prepare Online" header. I was directed the H&R Block Standard Online IRS Tax Program. The price was shown in red font as FREE* with *Additional fees apply for state return. After clicking the green START NOW button, I created a login and password and completed the federal return without filing a state return. At the end, it said I owed them $29.95 for the standard program. What did I do wrong or is not really free? Thanks for any info A.You did a few things wrong. You need to fully understand HOW you get your federal tax E-Filed without paying. I hope you haven't authorized H & R Block to hit your credit card already. There is probably some special code that needs to be used. You will probably have to spend time on the phone to get the freebee. I hope you didn't buy Money premium just for the free tax deal. The IRS is offering FREE filing to everyone this year. You just have to make sure you do your online dilegence so you don't pay AND the provider DOES file the return for you. The free tax filing option was one of the things that affected my decision to buy M05 Premium along with the free credit report and rebates. I usually buy taxcut every year so I figured this saved me that cost. As for giving my credit card to H&R Block, I didn't since I knew it was SUPPOSED to be FREE! I did recall reading that you can get free tax filing from some companies by first going to irs.gov and linking to those companies from there. I did just that, linked to H&R Block, and completed the same interview all over again with a different account name and was able to do the whole thing for free. As for the things I did wrong, I don't see that I did anything wrong. But maybe I did, which is why I posted my actions explicitly here. I'm guessing Microsoft and H&R Block haven't got their act together yet on this.
