Irs Free File

Q.Anyone have tales to tell, good or bad, about any of the large handful of providers offering the Irs Free File service?

A.I've used Turbo Tax and Tax Act. Tax Act has always worked really well for me - it's easy to use and it doesn't hang up when the server gets busy, which is why I left Turbo Tax for Tax Act. I've been using Tax Act Online for years. Each year it gets better. I just filed this week, the latest interface is really nice, very fast. It imports all your stuff from prior years, so all your personal information, employer ID's, etc is all set, you just need to update the amounts if you have the same job, investments, etc. They have a version that is listed as free, I use the deluxe federal and state which is free to use until you file, then $15 which includes both returns. https://www.taxactonline.com/s_online_tax2006/introduction/intro_inde... I don't. But I wonder, how does this work? Does the IRS tell the companies "If you don't let people with less than $52,000 AGI file for free, then we won't let you file for anyone else, either?" Are the companies just doing it for the word-of-mouth or the goodness of their hearts? Do they charge for filing the state forms and make their profits there? For the amount the IRS spends promoting this, I bet they could have just implemented their own e-filing solution, offer it to all and sundry for free, and save themselves, which of course means the citizenry at large, a lot of money just in the reduced paperwork and increased accuracy. I have used http://www.citizentax.com for two years with no problems.
