I went to the irs.gov site and looked at free efile.Q.I used to use telefile to file my 4868, automation extension for the form 1040. That has been discontinued. Now, we are supposed to use a free efile site. I went to the irs.gov site and looked at free efile. Most don't have 4868 and those that say they do are misleading. You have to fill out everything to file the tax return before you even get to the extension part, and then you find out they don't have extension filing. Is there a free, no hassle way to efile Form 4868? I don't want to do the whole return - just the extension. A.With over two months before either your return or an extension request is due, it is hard to get excited over your need now for efiling the 4868 form. The form is available for download from http://www.irs.gov and is easily filled in with ESTIMATED 2005 tax figures and mailed to the IRS (39 cents). The estimated figures are not even binding, since you don't even have to sign the request. You DO realize that this is only a request for late FILING, not for late PAYMENT of any taxes due? Since you are used to using TeleFile (now discontinued) or 1040EZ, it is difficult to imagine a situation where you can't get your sh.. together and file before April 17, much less extending the filing deadline for 6 months. For all the time and effort you're spending on trying to e-file the extension, can't you simply fill one out on paper and send it in?
