IRS deduction for weight loss

Q.Did anybody else see "IRS deduction for weight loss"?

A.I hate to tell you this, but in order to get the IRS medical deduction you have to spend ten percent of your income or more on it. I know, because I just went through this with our accountant. After totaling up all the non-reimbursed expenses for Marty's prostate cancer, my rotator cuff therapy, we still couldn't get the deduction. I don't think if I could have thrown in the $400 or so a year I spend to belong to Gold's Gym, and my skating lessons, it would have helped much. Maybe if I got a personal trainer on a daily basis? Your diet stuff would not be deductible - but possibly Mary's would if he could prove he was doing it for health and obesity reasons. I know that you are not obese. Maybe you were at one point in your life, but you aren't now. The deduction is only good if you are dieting for health.. As in - if you don't diet you would die from diabetes, heart problems, etc. As for the 10% - it isn't just the diet related stuff that has to add up to 10% of your income. And - if they are allowing the deduction - it also goes to say that they will allow it to be a pre-deduction like on a cafeteria plan. It should be able to fall under the medical plan. You can have the extra cash taken out of your check pre-tax then reimburse when you turn your receipts in. This actually works out better for the individual than claiming it on the taxes. But it only works if you have an employer who offers the plan. I think what she is saying is related to the standard deduction. For instance I could take a deduction for my medical bills, etc. legally. But I can't because the standard deduction is more.
