Need an attorney to solve my Irs tax debtQ.Any suggestions anyone has for me as to the least expensive and expedient way to rid myself of tax burden will be greatly appreciated. Soon-to-be divorced secretary, two children, Atlanta area, deeply in IRS tax debt (not consumer credit) due to "x2b's" sub-contracting income during length of marriage. I have had joint legal advice with spouse and the option of filing an O.I.C. was presented, but the least amount the I.R.S. and State will supposedly accept is -still- beyond my means of obtaining. 1) With my clerk hourly wage income, custody of two children where half income is childcare expenses, and less-than-stable financial assistance from spouse, would... a) A lesser O.I.C. be allowed due to my own personal income and responsibilities and not considering "ex2b's" assistance? b) If even possible, what are my chances of filing bankruptcy and -not- losing my only mode of transportation for work, doctor visits, children-related activities; AND my only bank credit card (used for upkeep and maintenance of above vehicle). Anyone in Atlanta area who is a tax attorney or knows of a reputable one likely to give me the time of day and assist me with my troubles? I can pay for a consultation visit and would be willing to work out a payment plan for any services rendered. A.Offer to make a settlement, AFTER CONSULTING COMPETENT COUNSEL. Generally, when you settle with them (and you must demonstrate why they should settle) you only pay cents on the dollar. If by COMPETENT COUNSEL, you mean an attorney, I take exception to this. A CPA is more likely to have Offer experience and only in a very few cases is an attorney required. If you include CPA's in COMPETENT COUNSEL, then I agree 100 %. I have had many clients declare bankruptcy on advice of legal counsel only to find out that their tax liability was not discharged due to the age of the assessment or the nature of the taxes owing.
