2001 IRS W-2, W-3, 1099 Forms for free-- Available elsewhere?

Q.Since Intuit wants $129 to activate QuickBooks 2001 to utilize the new tax forms, does anyone know of a free software program that allows you to input the numbers and print out an IRS-1099 form on a laser printer?

A.Those in to it sell such programming to Pro's for a whopping price; I believe they even offer an e'Filing module that costs up front plus a per filling fee. Consider just printing out the appropriate reports and filling in Free IRS forms manually. Unless of course your in the Biz and need to do many filings. No so, W2s should have been printed on the 2000 W2 forms in June, with the year manually changed. You can have form processing done by those with an upgraded QB version or subscription without this cost. You also can backdate the system clock before opening QB and print on the old forms, with the year crossed out. If you are not entering new data in the file there is nothing wrong with this from a safety standpoint. My attorneys feel it violates the QB software license agreement, but Intuit is aware of this practice and has not yet (to my knowledge) tried to stop it. The IRS can only compel a corporation to use the new forms, not the officers. I never heard them do so with a small business that went out of business. After all, every year countless companies go out of business without giving out W2 forms. In such cases IRS accepts substitute W2s like last paycheck stubs or other user created estimates. They even have a form that goes with such W2 equivalent forms. If you cannot find it I will get it for you. You could probably actually print a report and give it IRS and employees in lieu of W2s. Years I learned (at an big international CPA firm) to write, "Statement in Lieu of Form XXXX" when I did have a needed tax form. None of the statements were ever rejected by IRS or other government agencies.
