Respond now or wait to audit by IRS

Q.Just before Xmas we got an audit by the IRS , notice of the 93 taxes. Due to prior commitments in Dec and Jan we have attempted to delay the actual audit to late Feb or Mar. The appointment clerk said to simply wait for the 30 day notice. Today I got the 30 day letter and of course there are only 20 days left. They backdate by a week or more per the postmark. Others say the added benefit of such a delay is that the chances of an audit of the 92 taxes would be reduced since the 3 years would expire Apr 15,96 for the 92 tax year. The form letter ,form 915(DO), has the standard 4 choices and the Appointment Clerk and supervisor does not communicate well. I intend to go myself and 'meet the enemy' head on. The question is: Audit of 93 tax, 30 day notice(20 days left) respond now or in 19 days ? Is it better to have the audit appointment as late as possible or does that just cause additional pressure on me? What if I need to make a second trip with additional information and the 30 days have expired? I sincerely believe that I can document every deduction and then some. It appears that my tax preparer 'may have been' incompetent or worse. The total claim is under $2500 and to allow that same 'registered to practice before the irs' joker to represent me - is simply asking to be pounded into the ground . Yes, 93 was a lousy year and I was ill. So do tomorrow what could be done today ?? Thought I would ask here since there seem to be so many informed opinions here. Thanks in advance,

A.If you're prepared to go to audit, don't delay. You can only do so for so long and it looks better to go in as early as possible, put your best foot forward, show everything you have. If IRS requests more info, ask for a document request from the agent and comply with the request as soon as possible and to the letter. If you really have nothing to hide, you'll get out fine. If you have reason to believe you're on shakey ground, better see a competent practitioner and let him/her go in for you. If they find anything wrong in an audited return they then have the right to audit your returns back as far as 7 years.
