Reporting :Used a tax program will prevent you from getting an audit by IRSQ.I don't want to risk getting an audit by IRS since I'm a tax newbie. Besides, I hate filling forms by hand. I have done my own taxes using TurboTax for Win since 1994. I am pleased with the program. So I'm wodering Which tax software are you going to use to file the return for Tax Year 1998? Is using the software a more reliable way to do it correctly? Are you going to file it online A.I've read that, for a $10 fee, you can pay using a credit card this year. Since I owe about $1000 this year , the 1% cash back bonus from Discover would be about equal to this. I don't know who's providing this service, but the number is 1-888-2pa-ytax. My wife and I have used Kiplinger's Tax Cut software for the past 4 years and like it a lot. Doing taxes is a pain in the neck but the software takes a lot of the grunge work out of it. It also prints out any form that you might need but forgot to pick up at the local court house, IRS building, or post office. We're thinking of trying the e-file route this year but are a little nervous about them not recording the filing. I've had e-mail disappear before and that was annoying but this is a lot more important than that. If it works, though, it might be real nice to get our refund ASAP. We don't usually get a refund but a couple of things went that way this year and we will this time. Next year should have us back to normal, owing them about $300 or so. There's a large area in between. My taxes are easy enough to compute on my own. But, it's a PITA. Just calculating all the totals for things like charitable deductions is a nuisance. And, after I've filled out the form, I typically discover some last-minute deduction that causes me to re-compute everything, and cross out a bunch of numbers. For me, it's well worth $15 (typical price) to buy something like TaxCut. With the software, I enter every item exactly once, and forget about it. All the totals and carry-overs between forms happen automatically. Saves a tremendous amount of time. Been using Turbo Tax for five or so years. Couldn't do without it. Well, perhaps, that's an exaggeration, but it would cost me a few sleepless nights. Handles capital gains, div, depreciation, deductions, and miscellaneous credits easily once all the data are posted. Only foreign tax credits require some pencil moving time for me.
